About Lauchlan Chipman

John Lauchlan Carter Chipman was born in Melbourne on 12 September 1940, and educated at Essendon North State and Essendon High School, matriculating (Year 12) in 1957.  Awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship, he enrolled for Law and Arts at the University of Melbourne.  He was then balloted into National Service, which he completed in 1959 with the Royal Australian Armoured Corps. He also qualified with a cinematograph operator's Certificate from RMIT in 1962.  In 1963 he completed his Melbourne BA with First Class Honours in Philosophy, was placed first, and awarded the Hastie Exhibition.  He won a Commonwealth Postgraduate Scholarship and completed his Master of Arts at the University of Melbourne with First Class Honours in 1965 for his thesis on Wittgenstein's work titled "Criteria and Verification Problems".
