Executive Experience - Monash University (1993-1996)
(i) Line Responsibilities (Reporting to Vice-Chancellor)
Management, development and superintendence of Monash University Gippsland Campus. Transformation from a free-standing College of Advanced Education to a fully integrated teaching and research campus of Monash University, which also supports Monash University’s distance education and Open Learning Australia course delivery and management system. Academic and administrative integration due for completion December 1995.
Development of Monash University Berwick Campus (greenfields site on schedule to open in 1996, growing to 1,000 EFTSU within four years).
Superintendence and development of Distance Education and Open Learning (from all six campuses).
Responsibility for staff and student equity issues, all campuses, including equity issues in selection and admissions, equal opportunity, equity aspects of staffing policy development (academic and general), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student selection and support, facilities and services planning for students and staff with disabilities, development and implementation of Monash University Equity Plan.
Supervision of the University Librarian, all campuses.
Co-supervision of Computing and Information Technology services, and advice on Multimedia, and inter-campus Networking Systems and Services, all campuses.
(ii) Other General Areas of Responsibility
Development of overall University policy and planning, including physical planning for all campuses, as member of Vice-Chancellor’s Executive Committee, Vice-Chancellor’s Campus Planning Committee, and Committee of Deans.
Development and implementation of education policy as a member of Academic Board and alternate Chair, Education Committee.
Participation in profile and other University to Government negotiations with DEET and the Victorian Office of Higher Education.
(iii) Other Specific Areas of Responsibility
Community relations - Gippsland and Berwick regions.
Alumni relations - Gippsland region.
Fostering, development and oversight, subject to the direction of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International Programs and Development), of international programs including overseas student recruitment, off-shore delivery from Gippsland and Berwick campuses, and all Monash University international distance education delivery.
Research development including collaborative research with industry - Gippsland region. (First two large ARC grants to Gippsland Campus received in 1995, also $220,000 in Targeted Institutional Links.)
Carriage of serious misconduct investigation involving academic staff.
Representative of University nationally and internationally on all distance education and internal University open learning matters.
Approval of all academic and general staff leave, Gippsland Campus.
Academic restructuring (including staff redeployment and early retirement) Gippsland Campus.
2. Executive Experience - University of Wollongong (1989-1993)
(i) Line Responsibilities (Reporting to Deputy Vice-Chancellor)
Staff Development Centre - for academic and general staff development, including enhanced teaching skills and career planning (1992-1993).
Student Learning Assistance Centre - provides training in study techniques, ELS assistance, listening and writing skills, time and stress management (1989-1993).
Aboriginal Education Centre - recruitment and support of students of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island descent (1989-1993)
Information Technology Services - campus computing, campus networks, telecommunications, video-conferencing, and sales and service of computing equipment and components (1992-1993).
Library - including chairing academic committee for advising Librarian on monograph and serials expenditure (1990-1993).
University of Wollongong Foundation - major capital fundraising body for soliciting philanthropic support (1991-1993).
Friends of the University of Wollongong - community relations body, particularly for bonding University and Illawarra through mutually beneficial community service (1989-1993).
Alumni - fostering goodwill and endowment from graduates and others with strong University links (1992-1993).
(ii) Other General Areas of Responsibility
Quality - General oversight of the undergraduate program.
Access and Equity - overseeing policy development and implementation.
Student Discipline - Chair Investigations Committee (alternate with Deputy Vice-Chancellor) which advises Vice-Chancellor on student breaches of discipline and appropriate penalties.
Academic Development and Outside Studies Program Leave - study leave approvals and staff development in effective use of all forms of academic-related leave.
Research - Chair Human Experimentation Ethics Committee.
Performance Measurement Indicators - Development and implementation.
Timetable - overview of University timetable to ensure efficient use of physical facilities.
Off-campus teaching and open learning, involving distance education, new site development, relationships with public and commercial TV broadcasters, and development of multimedia technologies.
Community Relations - representing Vice-Chancellor as required on civic and community bodies.
(iii) Other Specific Areas of Responsibility
Development of PAGE Consortium with SBS and other universities to deliver professional and graduate education via SBS (1992-1993).
Undergraduate admissions - determination of enrolment strategies and cut-off scores, to meet planning targets (1989-1992).
Space utilisation - allocation and reallocation of space and related physical facilities for academic purposes. Also includes grounds access, campus order and transport, traffic and parking policy and control.
Chair the Interim Board of Directors of the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music (1989-1992).
